The Airman Battle Uniform ABU is the new camouflage battledress uniform for the United States Air Force. It features the new pixelated tiger-stripe pattern approved for the United States Air Force, it is made to military specifications and updated with several improvements from the earlier versions. It is made by Propper International, one of the largest makers of field and tactical clothing for the U.S. Military and Public Safety agencies in the country. The ABU is wash and wear, meaning the only care needed will be to wash and dry it. Additionally, its permanent press finish means the uniform cannot be starched, pressed or dry-cleaned. Airmen will be able to pull the ABU from the clothes dryer and wear it without further treatment. Any ironing could degrade the effectiveness of the uniform.NOTE TO MILITARY PERSONNEL: THIS GARMENT HAS NIR TECHNOLOGY AND IS APPROVED FOR MILITARY OPERATIONS.Near Infrared (NIR) Signature Management Technology is used by the U.S. Department of Defense to prevent detection by NIR Image Converters. These photocathode devices do not detect temperatures, but rather infrared radiation variances. NIR-compliant uniforms use a special fabric that allows soldiers to appear at the same radiation level as the surrounding terrain, thus making them more difficult to detect.
